South Korea: PIPC introduces Privacy by Design certification program

On April 21, 2024, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) and the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) established a Privacy by Design pilot certification program and granted certification to a company that manufactures home security camera systems. The certification aims to strengthen the safety of various personal information collection devices utilized in daily life. The PIPC stated that four products were considered for the certification and it was awarded after evaluation and testing and once complementary measures were introduced to correct vulnerabilities. The PIPC stated that detailed certification procedures and standards will be introduced in the future to ensure products that emphasize privacy protection are recognized as being more competitive in the market.

The PIPC highlighted that businesses who want to participate in the program can apply via email to [email protected] between April 24, 2024, and May 17, 2024.
