Japan: PPC publishes documents as part of triennial review of the APPI

On March 22, 2024, and April 10, 2024, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC) published documents as part of its triennial review of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI), as part of its agenda for the 227th and 280th Personal Information Protection Committee meetings, respectively.

The PPC conducted hearings with experts and industry associations and is considering revisions to the APPI in the following areas:

  • criminal penalties;

  • the introduction of a surcharge system;

  • the protection of children's personal information; and

  • class action lawsuits, particularly injunctions and the recovery of damages.

You can read the document discussing criminal penalties and the surcharge system here, and the document discussing the protection of children's personal information and class action lawsuits here, both only available in Japanese.
