Washington: Bill on protecting employee rights relating to AI use referred to Senate Committee

On January 24, 2024, Senate Bill 6299 on Protecting Employee Rights in the Workplace with regards to the use of digital technology was referred to the Labor and Commerce Committee. The bill provides that it is unlawful for any employer to use a replica of an employee's voice or likeness without the explicit consent of the employee in regard to that specific use. The bill also stipulates that it is unlawful for employers to utilize AI or generative AI to evaluate or otherwise make employment decisions regarding current employees without written disclosure of the employer's use of such technology. In regard to the disclosure, it must use understandable, plain language, and be in the employee's preferred language.
