Spain: INCIBE issues blogpost on how to identify Adware

The Spanish National Cybersecurity Institute ('INCIBE') issued, on 9 July 2020, a blog post ('the Blog Post') informing about malware designed to display ads on the screen of any computer ('Adware'), usually for malicious purposes without user consent. In particular, INCIBE detailed that Adware aims to collect private information to create a user profiles based on preferences and display advertisements based on the user's interests, highlighting that Adware can cause sensitive data stored on the user's device to end up in the possession of third parties without the user's consent or knowledge. Moreover, the Blog Post contains recommendations on how Adware can be identified, among other things, through signs such as new icons appearing on the desktop, a slow computer browser, or the sudden change of the search engine. Finally, INCIBE highlighted protection measures such as anti-malware security applications with automatic updates, awareness to terms and conditions when installing new programmes on the computer, and downloading programmes from official stores.
