Japan: Chunichi Shimbun addresses data breach potentially affecting 140,000 customers

Chunichi Shimbun Co., Ltd. issued, on 24 June 2021, a statement in which it addressed a data breach potentially affecting the personal information of up to 140,000 customers. In particular, Chunichi Shimbun noted that it had received a report from Landmarks Co., Ltd., a company outsourced to develop web campaigns, stating that it had been the target of a cyber attack. Specifically, Chunichi Shimbun highlighted that personal information including names, addresses, genders, ages, telephone numbers, and email addresses may have been leaked. To this end, Chunichi Shimbun emphasised it had established a countermeasure team to secure contracts and educate concerned parties about the implementation of stricter management systems in handling operations. Furthermore, the Chunichi Shimbun outlined that it had reported the incident to the Personal Information Protection Commission on 24 June 2021.
