International: BfDI and OPC release joint statement on 72nd meeting of Berlin Group

On January 8, 2024, the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI) issued a joint statement with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) of Canada regarding the 72nd meeting of the International Working Group on Data Protection in Technology (the Berlin Group) held in Ottawa, Canada, from December 7 to 8, 2023.

In particular, the joint statement addressed that a paper on 'Central Bank Digital Currencies' had been discussed and a written procedure to formalize its adoption would follow. The Berlin Group also discussed other topical papers and agreed to continue working on these topics, which are 'Data Sharing,' 'Neurotechnology,' and 'AI and LLMs (Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models).' According to the joint statement, due to the elevated urgency of AI and LLMs and their potential consequences on digital society, the Berlin Group decided to apply a 'fast-track' way of working on the paper, with a view of adopting the same at the next Berlin Group Meeting.
