Hamburg: HmbBfDI releases 2022 activity report
The Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information ('HmbBfDI') released, on 27 March 2022, its 2022 activity report. In particular, the report outlines that, in 2022, the HmbBfDI received 2,162 complaints, compared to the 2,770 complaints recorded in the preceding year. In addition, the report specifies that, in the reporting period, the HmbBfDI received 859 data breach notifications, highlighting that only 52 of the notifications were classified as 'non-reportable', which resulted in 2022 being the year with the highest number of reportable data breaches since the entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) ('GDPR'). In this regard, the report also points out that emails sent to the incorrect recipient (293) and hacking attacks (227) constituted the most frequently reported data breaches.
Moreover, the report outlines that, in 2022, the HmbBfDI issued:
- ten reprimands;
- one compliance order; and
- 15 fines.
