France: CNIL announces that warned organisations now comply with cookie rules
The French data protection authority ('CNIL') announced, on 29 June 2021, that organisations to which it had sent formal notices regarding non-compliance with CNIL's cookie guidelines and recommendations had all come in compliance within the one-month deadline set by CNIL. In particular, CNIL outlined that the organisations in question had modified their practices in order to allow internet users to refuse cookies as easily as to accept them.
In addition, CNIL reiterated that this first campaign of verifications and corrective measures will be followed by similar actions over the coming months. Further to this point, CNIL outlined that other publishers with high-traffic websites are not yet in compliance, and that other formal notices could be issued and several sanctioning procedures have already been launched. Moreover, CNIL issued a reminder that in the event of non-compliance with the applicable rules on cookies, organisations may incur financial penalties of up to 2% of their turnover.
