EU: Commission announces advancement of joint work with Japan on digital identity and AI

On April 30, 2024, the European Commission announced advancements of joint work with Japan on digital identity, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence (AI) during the second Digital Partnership Council meeting.

The Commission outlined the outcomes of the meeting, which include:

  • the signature between the EU and Japan of a Memorandum of Cooperation on digital identities and trust services, creating benefits for e-commerce and business, and which will facilitate data free flow on the basis of the EU Digital Identity Wallet and trust services;
  • intention to enhance cooperation between the EU AI Office and Japan's AI Safety Institute, encouraging Japanese companies to participate in the Commission's AI Pact to foster early compliance with key provisions of the EU AI Act; and
  • agreement to explore the establishment of a regular information-sharing channel on online platform regulations, such as the European Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
