Alberta: OIPC issues statement on Government's contact tracing app

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta ('OIPC') issued, on 23 April 2020, a statement ('the Statement') in response to the Government of Alberta's ('the Government') decision to create a contact tracing application ('the App'). In particular, the Statement highlights that the Government will submit a Privacy Impact Assessment on the App. In addition, the OIPC outlined that, as the App is rolled out, the Government must provide ample information to the public to build trust with a clear and easy-to-understand description of its privacy practices, what type of personal information will be collected, how the information will be used, and in what circumstances it will be disclosed.
