USA: NIST publishes supplement to Digital Identity Guidelines
On April 22, 2024, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published a supplement to NIST SP 800-63B Digital Identity Guidelines: Authentication and Lifecycle Management.
What are the amendments to the Digital Identity Guidelines?
In particular, NIST highlighted that the supplement incorporates information on syncable authenticators. These are any cryptographic authenticator that allows for the private key to be cloned and stored separately from the authenticator to support the use of the key across different devices. When implemented, NIST noted that syncable authenticators provide a phishing resistant authenticator, with simplified recovery, cross device support, and consumer friendly platform authentication support.
