Panama: Data protection law enters into effect

Law No. 81 on Personal Data Protection entered into effect, on 29 March 2021, following its enactment in 2019. In particular, the Law which will be further regulated by an Executive Decree which is yet to be published governs the principles rights, obligations, and procedures in relation to the protection of personal data in Panama. Furthermore, the law provides for, among other things:

  • consent procedures for the processing of personal data;
  • obligations for the cross-border processing of personal data oringinating in Panama; and
  • a Personal Data Protection Council with advising power and functions.
