Newfoundland and Labrador: OIPC releases 2016-2017 annual report

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Newfoundland and Labrador ('OIPC') released, on 19 October 2017, its 2016-2017 annual report ('the Report'), in which it outlined the activities it had carried out with regard to awareness and enforcement of the Personal Health Information Act 2011 ('PHIA'). The Report summarises cases regarding health custodians' use of personal health information under PHIA, including in relation to a data breach that occured due to the actions of former employee of a health custodian. Moreover, the Report outlines key statistics in relation to the OIPC's activities, including that it had received 315 complaints in relation to PHIA, an increase from 96 in the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
