The Ministry of Science, Technology and Telecommunications ('MICITT') announced, on 27 February 2023, that it had signed, together with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ('UNESCO'), a declaration of intent on the subject of artificial intelligence ('AI'), aimed at receiving guidance and support in developing an AI strategy for Costa Rica. In particular, the MICITT noted that previous studies, as well as reports constitute the bedrock to draft the AI strategy, where the proposed objectives are adapted to the context of Costa Rica, with an ethical and responsible vision on the use of AI. Moreover, the MICITT highlighted Costa Rica's plan to become a Central American hub for the development of AI.
