UK: Ofcom publishes strategic approach to AI

On March 26, 2024, the Office of Communications (Ofcom) announced that it published its strategic approach to artificial intelligence (AI) for 2024-2025. In particular, Ofcom noted its support of the UK Government's AI principles, and that the update to the strategic approach sets out their approach to AI over the coming year to ensure that the benefits of AI are harnessed and the risks are managed.

The strategic approach provides, among other things, an update on:

  • the regulation of services that use AI technologies;
  • Ofcom's work to date to understand and tackle AI risks;
  • the capability to address AI risks;
  • cooperating with others on AI issues; and
  • the planned AI work.

Moreover, the strategic approach provides that Ofcom has a wide program of work in place to identify current and emerging AI risks and opportunities. Ofcom highlights key cross-cutting risks such as synthetic media, personalization, and security, along with its ongoing efforts to tackle them.
