Qatar: MOTC signs MoU with TÜViT to set up security technology lab

The Cybersecurity Affairs Sector at the Ministry of Transport and Communications ('MOTC')  signed, on 30 October 2019, a memorandum of understanding ('MoU') with a subsidiary of TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH ('TÜViT') to set up the first security technology lab ('the Lab') in the Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab states which aims to test security products and ICT products, while enhancing the security standards in Qatar. In particular, the MoU will contribute to the implementation of Qatar’s national cybersecurity strategy, which focuses, among other things, on oil and gas, Internet of Things ('IoT'), smart cities and autonomous vehicles. Moreover, the MoU outlines that the Lab process would begin with technology developers submitting requests to the Lab to check hardware and software products, followed by an extensive investigation into the products and a subsequent issuance of certificates by the Lab. Finally, the MoU highlights that the Lab has been built to International Organisation for Standardisation ('ISO') standards and will be audited every two years to ensure it is up to the standards of the Common Criteria Recognition Agreement, an international agreement between 31 nations.
