Portugal: CNPD releases statement on new Schengen Information System

The Portuguese data protection authority ('CNPD') published, on 7 March 2023, a blog post reminding the entry into operation, on the same date, of the new Schengen Information System ('SIS'). In particular, the CNPD detailed that the SIS is an information system which is used in the field of border controls and in the field of police cooperation and judicial cooperation in criminal matters by the Schengen States.

Moreover, the CNPD highlighted that all individuals have the right of access to their personal data processed in the SIS, as well as the right to correct them if inaccurate or to delete them if they are processed unlawfully, and that the CNPD is the national supervisory authority for the national part of the SIS.
