Indonesia: Government revises law relating to social media

On September 25, 2023, the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) announced that the Trade Minister of Indonesia, Zulkifli Hasan, signed the Revised Minister of Trade Regulation No. 50 of 2020 concerning provisions for business licensing, advertising, development, and supervision of business actors in trading through electronic systems. In particular, Kominfo noted that the regulation includes a number of provisions related to e-commerce, and notably, allows social media platforms to be used to facilitate the promotion of goods and services, however, that direct transactions are not allowed.

Additionally, Kominfo stated that the Government prohibits social media from doubling as e-commerce to prevent misuse of personal data for business purposes.
