On April 22, 2024, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) announced that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) issued a Request for Proposal for the Engagement of an Agency to Conduct Market Study on Artificial Intelligence and Competition.

The PIB highlighted that the objectives of the study include:

  • understanding trends and patterns of artificial intelligence (AI) and ascertaining enforcement and advocacy priorities of the CIC with respect to AI and its application in markets;
  • understanding certain key AI systems and markets/ecosystems thereof, including AI actors/stakeholders, essential inputs/resources, value chains, market structures, and parameters of competition;
  • examining the emerging and potential competition issues in these markets/ecosystems, if any;
  • studying the scope and nature of AI applications/use cases, and assessing associated opportunities, risks, and ramifications from a competition standpoint;
  • understanding the existing and evolving regulatory/legal frameworks governing AI systems and applications in India and other major jurisdictions; and
  • reaching out to all relevant stakeholders for a holistic understanding of the issues at the intersection of AI and competition.

The PIB noted that the last date for submission of proposals is June 3, 2024, at 5:00 pm IST.
