Germany: BSI President provides information on the opportunities and risks of AI

On April 19, 2024, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) published information provided by the President of the BSI during the Digital Minister Conference on the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence (AI).

The BSI highlighted that AI has many potential uses, including:

  • public administration, such as acceleration of administrative action by evaluating existing sources and simplifying access to information; and
  • cyber resilience, such as situation reports, identifying gaps, or detecting malware.

However, the BSI warned that AI could be used for disinformation, espionage, sabotage, or ransomware attacks. Furthermore, the malware can be created more quickly without the need for prior technical knowledge.

The President of the BSI mentioned that the BSI applauds the federal and state governments for using existing competencies and working together on the topics of digitalization and cybersecurity, particularly regarding AI.
