October 21, 2020
The Art of Privacy is the new video series from OneTrust DataGuidance exploring key privacy and data protection concepts with commentary from industry-leading voices. In this episode, Matthias Glatthaar, Head of data privacy and digital at Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund discusses the challenges of building people's trust through effective data protection practices.
Matthias emphasises how trust is often a more significant influence on people's behaviour than privacy risks, and how the level of trust an individual has in an organisation can determine whether or not they use the organisation's products or services. Having highlighted the fundamental importance trust can have, Matthias goes on to explore the ways in which trust can be built through a privacy program by looking beyond privacy laws and focusing on people's perceptions and expectations.
Matthias also highlights two key elements in building trust: transparency and giving customers meaningful control. In relation to both transparency and empowering customers, Matthias stresses the importance of simple, easy to use, and easy to understand tools and materials. He concludes by noting how this trust is becoming increasingly significant for businesses as the gap between processing activities and people's general understanding of these activities widens.
