Yukon: IPC issues guidance to help small custodians with HIPMA compliance

The Yukon Information and Privacy Commissioner ('IPC') issued, on 22 April 2021, guidance to help small custodians navigate Yukon's Health Information Privacy and Management Act ('HIPMA'). In particular, Diane McLeod-McKay, noted that "since HIPMA came into force in 2016, we have heard from many smaller custodians who have described their challenges in understanding the legislation and fulfilling its requirements". In addition, McLeod-McKay highlighted that "we know that HIPMA may appear overwhelming, but its obligations are relatively straightforward and intuitive, and can easily be worked into an organisation's operations, no matter how small." Moreover, the guidance covers various areas including collection, use, disclosure, consent and breach notification.
