USA: Senators send letter requesting FTC investigation of TikTok

U.S. Senator, Josh Hawley, announced, on 29 May 2020, that he, along with U.S. Senators, Edward Markey, Marsha Blackburn, and Richard Blumenthal, sent a letter ('the Letter') to the Federal Trade Commission ('FTC') requesting an investigation into TikTok Inc. following new evidence of alleged violations of children's privacy and failures to abide by the terms of a 2019 settlement. In particular, the Letter highlights that as the COVID-19 ('Coronavirus') pandemic continues to keep children at home and that their screen time increases, it is imperative that the FTC upholds its obligation to protect children's privacy and enforce the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act ('COPPA').
