USA: NIST releases concept paper on AI Risk Management Framework

The National Institute of Standards and Technology ('NIST') announced, on 14 December 2021, that it had developed, for public review, a concept paper for the Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework ('AI RMF'). Moreover, NIST highlighted that this AI RMF incorporates comments and ideas from a NIST Request for Information and a workshop. In particular, NIST explained that the AI RMF is intended for voluntary use and to address risks in the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI products, services, and systems. Furthermore, this AI RMF is to be considered as an attempt to explain how AI risks differ from risks in other domains, and to offer instructions for creating and maintaining actionable guidance that is broadly adoptable. Finally, NIST stated that it intends to publish the initial draft for public comment in early 2022 with the goal of releasing the AI RMF 1.0 in early 2023.

Feedback can be submitted to [email protected] by 25 January 2022.
