USA: FPF releases report on AI in the APAC region

On May 23, 2024, the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) announced a comprehensive report entitled 'Navigating Governance Frameworks for Generative AI Systems in the Asia-Pacific.' The FPF stated that the report examines the current state of the governance frameworks for generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems in several countries in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) to include:

  • Australia;
  • China;
  • Japan;
  • Singapore; and
  • South Korea.

Key takeaways

The FPF highlighted that some of the key takeaways from the report include:

  • a comparison of the regulatory responses to generative AI across the APAC region;
  • details about China's approach to AI regulations;
  • an overview of existing laws and regulations that may apply to generative AI; and
  • analyses of current frameworks for developing and deploying generative AI systems and language learning models (LLMs) with common use cases.

The FPF also mentioned that the report includes key points for policymakers, developers, and deployers to include the need to counter the risk of regulatory fragmentation across the regions and that internal AI governance structures are recognized as necessary for the responsible development and use of generative AI.
