USA: Biden-Harris Administration unveils principles for developing and deploying AI in the workplace

On May 16, 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration released its fact sheet on critical steps to protect workers from the risks of artificial intelligence (AI).

In line with President Biden's Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence, the Biden-Harris Administration outlines the following principles which apply to the development and deployment of AI systems in the workplace:

  • having workers and their representatives be informed of and have genuine input in the design, development, testing, training, use, and oversight of AI systems;
  • ethically developing AI;
  • establishing AI governance and human oversight;
  • ensuring transparency in AI use;
  • protecting labor and employment rights;
  • using AI to enable workers and improve job quality;
  • supporting workers impacted by AI by having employers support and upskill workers; and
  • ensuring responsible use of worker data.
