UK: ICO instructs websites to ensure cookie compliance

On November 21, 2023, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) announced that some of the UK's top websites would face enforcement action if they did not make changes to comply with data protection law. In particular, the ICO noted that some websites did not give users a choice over whether or not to be tracked for personalized advertising. In this regard, the ICO stated that it had written to companies running the UK's most visited websites setting out the ICO's concerns and giving them 30 days to ensure their websites comply with the law.

The ICO highlighted that it would provide an update in January 2024, and provide details of companies that had not addressed the ICO's concerns.
