UK: ICO approves first UK eIDAS qualified trust service provider

The Information Commissioner's Office ('ICO') announced, on 27 July 2021, that it had approved GMO GlobalSign Ltd as the UK's first qualified trust service provider ('QTSP') under the Electronic Identification and Trust Services for electronic Transactions (Amendment etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 and the Electronic Identification and Trust Services for Electronic Transactions Regulation 2016 (No. 696) ('UK eIDAS Regulations'). In particular, the ICO outlined that trust services aid in ensuring that electronic transactions can occur securely and legally using mechanisms such as electronic signatures and that, to become a QTSP, organisations must undergo a conformity assessment, checked by the ICO, to demonstrate that they meet the requirements of the UK eIDAS Regulations. Specifically, GlobalSign is a QTSP for services regarding qualified certificates for electronic signatures and qualified certificates for electronic seals.
