UK: DIST and UKRI publish response to AI Regulation White Paper
On February 6, 2024, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DIST) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published a response to the AI Regulation White Paper consultation. Key regulators, including the Office of Communications (Ofcom) and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), are asked to publish their approach to managing artificial intelligence (AI) by April 30, 2024. Specifically, to provide details on the current skill sets and expertise of regulators to address the risks of AI and a plan for how AI will be regulated over the coming year.
The press release highlighted that the UK's approach will ensure that it can quickly adapt to emerging issues and avoid placing burdens on businesses. Also, the UK Government will launch a steering committee to support and guide activities of a formal regulator coordination structure within the Government.
