Texas: Bill relating to prohibiting use of social media by children introduced to General Assembly

House Bill ('HB') 896 relating to prohibiting use of social media platforms by children was introduced, on 12 July 2022, to the General Assembly of Texas. In particular, HB 896 would mandate that an individual between 13 and 18 years of age may not use a social media platform. More specifically, HB 896 would require, among other things, that a social media platform shall:

  • require its users to use an account to access the social media platform; and
  • verify that each account is held by an individual who is at least 18 years of age.
