Sweden: Riksdag approves proposal to implement Whistleblowing Directive

The Swedish Parliament ('Riksdag') approved the Labour Market Committee's proposal to adopt the Government's Bill for the Implementation of the Whistleblowing Directive, resulting in the Whistleblowing Act (2021:890). This act implements the EU Whistleblowing Directive into Swedish law, enhancing protection for whistleblowers, clarifying reporting processes, and maintaining whistleblower anonymity. Businesses with 50 or more employees are mandated to establish reporting channels, with provisions for reporting to authorities in certain cases. The Whistleblowing Act took effect on 17 December 2021.
