Sri Lanka: Personal data protection bill published in official gazette
The Bill to provide for the Regulation of Processing of Personal Data (2021) ('the PDP Bill') was published, on 25 November 2021, in the Gazette of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, dated 19 November 2021. In particular, the publication of the PDP Bill follows from the approval by the Cabinet of Ministers of the draft act formulated by the Legal Draftsman Department earlier in 2021. Accordingly, the PDP Bill will now be presented for readings in the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

Bill presented to Parliament for first reading
The Parliament of Sri Lanka announced, on 20 January 2022, that the PDP Bill was presented for its first reading, the session for which was adjourned on 21 January 2022. In particular, the Parliament highlighted that the PDP Bill is proposed to, among other things, provide for the regulation of the processing of personal data and strengthen the rights of data subjects in relation to the protection of personal data.

Bill scheduled for second reading
The Parliament of Sri Lanka confirmed, on 4 March 2022, that a second reading of the PDP Bill will take place on 9 March 2022.
