South Korea: PIPC releases statement for support for use of autonomous vehicle data

On July 11, 2024, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) published a press release regarding its support for the safe use of video data for the development of autonomous driving technology. The PIPC stated that a legal basis for using videos taken by autonomous vehicles is established in Article 25-2 of the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

The PIPC highlighted that since February 2024, the regulatory sandbox system has been permitted to separately store original video footage from autonomous vehicles containing the faces or actions of pedestrians so that the data may be used for technology development provided that safety measures are observed. The PIPC also mentioned that it will establish clear guidelines to ensure attempts by companies to utilize data do not face difficulties due to unclear regulations. Further, the PIPC stated that it will listen to difficulties expressed during its on-site visits and meetings and aim to strengthen policy support to resolve the difficulties.
