South Korea: PIPC announces personal information practices for online ordering and delivery services
On June 27, 2024, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) reported the results of the 'Self-regulation of Public-Privacy Cooperation in the field of online platform order delivery.' The PIPC stated that the results showed improvement in personal information protection for online ordering and delivery services. The PIPC reminded that the public-private cooperation self-regulation system was introduced to ensure that online platforms can flexibly respond to changes in the personal information environment. The PIPC highlighted that results show the level of security measures for personal information have been greatly strengthened for both the restaurant customers using the order delivery platform as well as restaurant and delivery workers. Results also showed that many of the companies participating applied additional personal information protection safety measures.
Specifically, methods of protecting personal data included:
- masking customer personal information within 24 hours;
- implementing secure authentication methods to access customer personal data; and
- transmitting customer data in a way that does not identify the customer.
The press release also stated that the voluntary regulations are applied in four fields including:
- open market;
- seller tools;
- ordering/delivery; and
- recruitment/human resources (HR).
