South Africa: Regulator confirms Enforcement Committee fully in force and reviews POPIA Regulations

The Information Regulator ('the Regulator') provided, on 26 October 2022, via Twitter, an update of the Regulator's recent activity and status. In particular, the Regulator outlined that the Enforcement Committee is in full force and complaints have been referred to it. Specifically, the Regulator noted that the majority of complaints it has received are in relation to direct marketing by means of unsolicited electronic communication.

Furthermore, the Regulator indicated that it is establishing a security compromises and data breach unit, as well as that an online complaints system will be established. Moreover, the Regulator recalled that the Regulations under the Protection of Privacy Information Act ('POPIA Regulations') are currently under review.
