Queensland: OIC publishes updated guidelines for sharing personal information between agencies

The Office of the Information Commissioner of Queensland ('OIC') published, on 28 May 2021, updated guidelines for sharing personal information between public agencies. In particular, the guidelines detail the key requirements necessary for sharing personal information and practices for assessing risks associated with information sharing, noting the importance of identifying, among other things:

  • the purpose of sharing the information;
  • whether the sharing is authorised by an act;
  • if disclosure is compliant with the privacy principles; and
  • whether the sharing involves overseas transfers.

Furthermore, the guidelines outline the importance of developing a written agreement detailing the parameters of the arrangement.
