Qatar: QFCA launches consultation on proposed amendments to data protection regulations and rules

The Qatar Financial Centre Authority ('QFCA') announced on LinkedIn, on 18 August 2021, its launch of a public consultation on the proposed amendments to the QFC Data Protection Regulations and Rules 2005 ('the Regulations and Rules'). In particular, the QFCA noted that the purpose of the amendments is to make the scope of the Regulations and Rules consistent with the provisions of international data protection laws, reflect global developments, and ensure the rules are fit for purpose for expanded digitalisation in a global business environment.

Notably, the amendments to the Regulations provide more clarity around the purpose of the Regulations and Rules and on specific requirements and principles. Additionally, the amendments also feature new articles, such as Article 22 which gives data subjects the right to not be subjected to a decision based solely on automated processing, and changes to the scope of specific articles, such as Article 17 which expands on the existing data subject right to have inaccurate personal data rectified.

Comments must be received within 30 days of the date of the consultation paper (18 August 2021). Furthmore, QFC firms can submit comments through the 'Consultation Notification' in the QFC Portal under the Legislation & Compliance functionality, and non-QFC individuals, advisors, businesses, and groups can submit comments here.

You can read the announcement and access the consultation paper, the proposed changes to the Regulations, and the proposed changes to the Rules here.
