Portugal: ANACOM releases report on data breaches in 2022

The National Regulatory Authority for Communications ('ANACOM') issued, on 20 April 2023, a report on data breaches and security incidents in 2022. In particular, ANACOM detailed that, in 2022, 37 security incidents were notified to ANACOM by electronic communications networks and services companies, one less than in 2021. However, ANACOM highlighted that the impact of the security incidents was significant as they affected around 6.4 million individuals, a significant increase compared to 2021. In addition, ANACOM stated that, of the 37 incidents reported, one had a huge impact on the network and services of a leading communications operator in Portugal, resulting from a cyber attack on its core network.

Lastly, ANACOM explained that, according to the notifications received, fixed telephony was the service most often affected, constituting 43% of total notifications received, followed by fixed internet service, with 38%, and pay-TV, with 30% of total notifications.
