Poland: UODO warns of cybersecurity risks for SMEs
On August 2, 2024, the Polish data protection authority (UODO) raised concerns over the cybersecurity practices of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) following a study conducted by ChronPESEL.pl and the National Debt Register. The study revealed that 35% of SMEs fear personal data theft of their employees due to frequent cyberattacks and large-scale data processing. Despite this, 90% of SMEs claimed that they adequately safeguard employee personal data. However, the UODO maintained that many still lack essential security measures, leaving them vulnerable to breaches.
The UODO emphasized that the SME sector employs 7.3 million people, making it a lucrative target for cybercriminals. The UODO also highlighted that most SMEs store personal data digitally in electronic form, but less than half of them use advanced security technologies like antivirus software and password protection. The UODO urged SMEs to adopt comprehensive cybersecurity practices and dispel the false sense of security that could lead to negligence, stressing that all businesses, regardless of size, are potential targets for data thieves.
