Panama: National Assembly approves draft data protection law during first debate

DataGuidance confirmed, on 16 October 2018, with Siaska SSS Lorenzo, Managing Partner at Arias, that the Draft Law No. 665 on the Protection of Personal Data ('the Draft Law') had been approved by the Panama National Assembly ('the National Assembly') during its first debate, on 12 October 2018, and will now proceed to a second debate. Lorenzo noted, "The Draft Law is now in the final stage of discussions at the National Assembly. It is open for discussion, so changes should be expected to be included in the original wording. This is still a pending matter for Panama's quest to keep up with international standards."

In addition, the National Assembly announced that under the Draft Law, the National Authority of Transparency and Access to Information ('ANTAI') would be the competent authority in charge of safeguarding the right to privacy established under the Draft Law.
