North Rhine-Westphalia: LDI NRW publishes 2021 activity report

The North Rhine-Westphalia State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information ('LDI NRW') announced, on 29 June 2022, that it had presented its 2021 activity report to the North Rhine-Westphalia Parliament. In particular, the report outlines that in 2021, the LDI NRW received, among others, 6,849 complaints, 1,412 written requests for advice, and 1,841 data breach notifications.

Separately, the LDI NRW highlighted that, in the reporting period, it had focused on the use of the 'Padlet' platform in schools and noted that, although the state supported the use of the learning platform at times, due to the pandemic and to accelerate the digitisation of schools, there remains significant data protection concerns. In fact, the LDI NRW explained that Padlet transfers data to the US without adequate protections and likely uses cookies and trackers without prior consent. As such, the LDI NRW recommended that data protection-friendly alternatives be used instead, such as the LOGINEO NRW LMS learning platform, which is offered by the state.

You can read the press release here and the report here, both only available in German.
