Mexico: INAI publishes enforcement statistics for first semester of 2022

The National Institute for Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data ('INAI') announced, on 31 July 2022, on Twitter, that it had published a summary of key enforcement statistics covering the period 1 January to 30 June 2022. In particular, the INAI outlined that, in the reporting period, it had issued fines totalling around MXN 18 million (approx. €928,874) for violations of the Federal Law on Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties ('LFPDPPP'). In addition, the INAI highlighted that the most sanctioned sectors were mass media, financial services and insurance, support services for businesses, waste and waste management, and remediation services. Moreover, the INAI stated that it had received 820 complaints for the improper use of personal data in the private sector and 47 in the public sector.

Further, INAI noted that the most frequent violations involved:

  • data protection principles under the LFPDPPP;
  • privacy notice requirements; and
  • obstruction of verification acts.
