Maryland: Bill on unsolicited telephone calls signed by Governor

Senate Bill 90 for An Act concerning Commercial Law - Consumer Protection - Telephone Solicitation (Stop the Spam Calls Act of 2023) was signed into law, on 3 May 2023, by the Governor of Maryland, and will enter into force on 1 January 2024. In particular, the Stop the Spam Calls Act of 2023 establishes that, without the prior express written consent of the telephoned party, a person may not make, or cause to be made, certain telephone calls by restricting the methods, times, and identifying information that the person making the call may utilise.

Notably, the Stop the Spam Calls Act qualifies any violation of its provisions as an unfair, abusive, or deceptive trade practice, subject to the enforcement and penalties under the Maryland Consumer Protection Act.
