Liechtenstein: DSS publishes 2022 activity report
On June 1, 2023, the Supervisory Authority of Liechtenstein (DSS) published its annual activity report for the year 2022.
The report highlights that, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the DSS successfully transitioned most of its operations back to a state of normalcy. Alongside a plethora of events and consultations, the supervisory activities of the DSS were intensified, and data protection audits were reinstated. It became evident that a significant number of companies had either neglected data protection measures in recent years or had not even considered its importance, despite the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) being in effect for several years.
Philipp Mittelberger, Partner at BATLINER WANGER BATLINER Attorneys at Law Ltd, corroborated the challenges presented in the European context. These challenges were primarily linked to the activities of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) and the harmonization of collaboration between supervisory authorities in cross-border proceedings, among other issues. Furthermore, ongoing legislative initiatives by the EU in the field of digital law spurred numerous discussions about their alignment with the GDPR and their future implementation in Liechtenstein.
