Japan: METI releases corporate privacy governance guidebook

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry ('METI') released, on 28 August 2020, its Corporate Privacy Governance Guidebook for the Digital Transformation Era ('the Guidebook'). In particular, the Guidebook highlights privacy requirements for a company's management, including the appointment of a privacy officer as well as dedicated resources for privacy efforts. In addition, the Guidebook outlines the responsibilities of privacy officers and the role of third-party organisations such as auditors. Finally, the Guidebook emphasises methods of minimising privacy risks within an organisation, such as Privacy Impact Assessments and Privacy by Design.

You can read the press release here and the Guidebook here, both only available in Japanese.
