Jamaica: JIS announces government plans to fast-track data protection law

The Jamaica Information Service ('JIS') announced, on 12 August 2019, that the Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Hon. Fayval Williams ('the Minister'), had stated, on 9 August 2019, that the Government of Jamaica were "moving rapidly" to complete the Data Protection Act, 2017 ('the Bill'). In particular, the Minister highlighted that Jamaicans would be entitled to new rights under the Bill and that Jamaica would join countries across the globe that have already implemented personal data protection laws.

In addition, the Minister noted that cybersecurity threats and data breaches are real and as a result individuals and corporate entities must implement safeguards against the same.
