The Italian data protection authority ('Garante') published, on 2 July 2021, its 2020 annual report. In particular, the report highlights the Garante's work in ensuring a balance between functional and effective data processing and respect for individuals' rights in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, including in relation to contact tracing apps, carrying out COVID-19 tests, the collection of health data of employees and customers, the 'green pass,' clinical trials and medical research, and the activation of remote teaching systems. In addition, among several other issues addressed by the Garante, the report highights in particular the regulation of data protection with respect to minors and the corrective measures imposed against TikTok Inc. in this respect

Furthermore, the report details a number of key data protection statistics from the year of 2020, noting that the Garante received 1,387 data breach notifications in 2020. In addition, the report highlights the Garante's work in consumer protection and reveals that the Garante imposed fines totalling €57 million in 2020 alone for aggressive and unlawful telemarketing practices.
