International: IAB urges Transatlantic Data Agreement in response to Meta penalty

On May 22, 2023, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) called for a new transatlantic data agreement in response to the Data Protection Commission's (DPC) decision to impose a fine of €1.2 billion on Meta Platforms Ireland Limited. Lartease Tiffith, the Executive Vice President for Public Policy at IAB, emphasized the far-reaching implications of this decision for all American companies that transfer data from EU markets to the US. Lartease also stressed the urgent need for a new transatlantic data agreement to facilitate continued commerce between the EU and US.

In addition, Lartease raised concerns over the recent undermining of Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) as a data transfer safeguard by the DPC. On this, Lartease supported the U.S. President, Joe Biden's, proposed solution, the Transatlantic Data Privacy Framework, and noted that it aligns with data privacy and security standards and would benefit small and medium-sized businesses.
