International: COP26 summit commences

The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference ('COP26') commenced on 31 October 2021, continuing until 12 November 2021, and is being hosted by the UK in Glasgow, Scotland. In particular, the UK COP26 portal explains that the event aims to bring together parties to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change of 12 December 2015, and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

COP26 Presidency publishes Glasgow Imperative paper

The COP26 Presidency published, on 31 October 2021, its paper entitled 'Glasgow Imperative: Closing the Adaptation Gap and Responding to Climate Impacts'. In particular, the paper outlines action on the adaptation, loss, and damage to date, as well as the work required to close the adaptation gap and respond to impacts, in addition to building a climate resilient future. Moreover, the Presidency intends to drive change during COP26 through the following five pillars:

  • building resilience across all of society;
  • effective risk management;
  • transforming finance
  • catalysing locally led action; and
  • harnessing the power of nature.
