International: CoE presents report on privacy and data protection implications of neural data use

On August 6, 2024, the Council of Europe (CoE) announced that the Consultative Committee of Convention 108 was presented during its last plenary meeting with a report on the privacy and data protection implications of using neurotechnology and neural data.

The CoE clarified that the report:

  • provides a legal and technical description of neurotechnology and neural data;
  • explores the present and future capabilities of neural interfaces and the regulatory initiatives on neurotechnologies;
  • proposes solutions to mitigate the 'mental privacy' challenges;
  • addresses data privacy implications of neural data processing; and
  • highlights the importance of protecting individuals' privacy while promoting scientific progress and innovation in neuroscience.
